Because Phreatophasma is known only from a single femur (upper leg bone), there is great uncertainty about what kind of animal Phreatophasma actually was, with suggestions ranging from it being a pelycosaur to parareptile. Most researchers consider Phreatophasma to be a nomen dubium.
