       Because Phreatophasma is known only from a single femur‭ (‬upper leg bone‭)‬,‭ ‬there is great uncertainty about what kind of animal Phreatophasma actually was,‭ ‬with suggestions ranging from it being a pelycosaur to parareptile.‭ ‬Most researchers consider Phreatophasma to be a nomen dubium.
