In Depth
The holotype fossils of Sellacoxa were originally found in 1873 by John Hopkinson not far from Hastings. They were re-named as a distinct genus of iguanodont dinosaur in 2010 by Kenneth Carpenter and Yusuke Ishida at the same time that they named another genus called Torilion. However, earlier in 2010 another paper written by David Norman was published in which the holotype fossil of Torilion had already been named as a new genus named Barilium. Further to this, Norman has claimed that the holotype of Sellacoxa is also a specimen of Barilium, which is why currently Sellacoxa has often appeared as a synonym to Barilium, even though it continues to be listed by others as a distinct genus.
