In Depth

The holotype fossils of Sellacoxa were originally found in‭ ‬1873‭ ‬by John Hopkinson not far from Hastings.‭ ‬They were re-named as a distinct genus of iguanodont dinosaur in‭ ‬2010‭ ‬by Kenneth Carpenter and Yusuke Ishida at the same time that they named another genus called Torilion.‭ ‬However,‭ ‬earlier in‭ ‬2010‭ ‬another paper written by David Norman was published in which the holotype fossil of Torilion had already been named as a new genus named Barilium.‭ ‬Further to this,‭ ‬Norman has claimed that the holotype of Sellacoxa is also a specimen of Barilium,‭ ‬which is why currently Sellacoxa has often appeared as a synonym to Barilium,‭ ‬even though it continues to be listed by others as a distinct genus.
